Family Practice/General

A general practitioner, or GP, is the physician most individuals see on a regular basis. To become a family practice physician, one must complete undergraduate and medical school and pass the national physician’s exam before starting their residency training. For a physician to become a board certified family physician, a residency program in family medicine must be completed, and a written cognitive examination must be passed. As of 2009, the American Board of Family Medicine requires that GPs complete continuing education to maintain their certification.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for a family practice/general physician will be very good in the next decade. Salary for a GP ranges from $100,000 to over $150,000 per year. Smaller cities like Lubbock, Texas and Casper, WY pay some of the highest salaries in the country.
